A veterinarian who is board certified in ophthalmology has undergone additional residency training (typically 4 years) following the completion of his/her veterinary degree. At the end of this residency period he/she must demonstrate a commanding knowledge of veterinary ophthalmology and microsurgical skills by successfully passing a rigorous board certification examination.
